Hermi's Story
Hermi, the ageless guardian of The Folklore Theatre, is a figure shrouded in mystery, his origins as enigmatic as the tales he tells. Known as the original "Lost Traveler," his journey began in the wilds of Eastern Europe. As a toddler, he wandered away from his mother while foraging for mushrooms in the dense, ancient Bessarabian forests. Lost and alone, he stumbled upon a quaint hut perched atop a pair of chicken legs, a sight straight out of a fairy tale.

The cottage belonged to an isolated trio of mystic crones, Romani Jews, living in harmony within the deep forest. They welcomed the lost boy with open arms, nurturing him and guiding him through the challenges of childhood. As he could not yet speak, the sisters bestowed him with a name: Hermes.

Hermes, the Greek messenger of the gods, guide of the dead, patron of travelers, inventor, trickster, and symbol of boundaries and speed, was an apt name for the young boy who would one day become a guardian of the human spirit. Under their care, Hermi learned the ways of the Romani people, absorbing their traditions, their folklore, and their deep connection to the natural world. From them he also learned alchemy, art, poetry, divination, kindness, and magic, the ability to listen and counsel humans and other animals, as well as a litany of very creative Yiddish curses!

It was from these three Romani mentors that Hermi also acquired his love of folklore, his understanding of mystical traditions, and his knack for humor. They instilled in him a sense of compassion, a childlike curiosity that never faded, and a deep respect for all living things, seen and unseen.

As Hermi grew older, his wanderlust emerged, drawing him away from the familiar comforts of the cottage. He ventured out into the world, guided by his newfound knowledge and a heart filled with compassion. His travels led him to far-off lands, where he encountered diverse peoples, learned new languages stories and ways, and discovered the secrets of the human connection to the mysteries of the natural world and cosmos.

In the late 19th century, Hermi was hired by a noble family in Europe to be their garden hermit. The family, impressed by his knack for storytelling, his knowledge of botany and his love of nature, offered him a secluded cottage and a small plot of land to cultivate. There, Hermi found a sense of peace and purpose, tending to his garden and immersing himself in his arts.

Over time, Hermi's reputation as a wise and knowledgeable mystic grew. People from all walks of life sought his counsel, drawn to his gentle, funny demeanor, magnificent wisdom, multiple talents, and his ability to offer guidance and support. He eventually became a widely recognized and respected mentor and counselor, sharing everything he knew with those who crossed his path. The coins they would pay him for his services, he called "Meshugganahs," as he understood that the only intrinsic power of money was in the impulse behind it. It could close doors or open them. He was known to say "Money is like manure. It should be spread around the lands, encouraging growth."

Hermi's connection to The Folklore Theatre began when he was invited to create a magical garden there. His keen eye for design, artistry and knowledge of plants transformed the location into a magical, living, breathing world, captivating patrons and earning him a place among the theatre's most beloved characters. They built him a small house right next to the theatre building, where he lives now, educating and entertaining all who come there.

Today, Hermi continues to serve as the guardian and guide of The Folklore Theatre. He is a timeless figure who embodies the spirit of storytelling and the enduring power of the human imagination. His ageless wisdom, vision, hilarious wit, his multilingual abilities, his creative, artistic talents and gentle, compassionate heart make him a popular attraction and respected member of the Folklore community. Hermi is the FolkHeart.
