Who We Are
The New Folklore Theatre Company began in 2011 as The Folklore Theatre Company on Cape Ann, Massachusetts · producing over 40 original intergenerational productions rooted in local and world folklore. In 2023 we rebranded and reinvented as a fully virtual, internationally distributed audio theatre company, operating under the artistic direction of Rev. Rabbi Henry-Cameron Allen, OCP, ICGC.
We are a global company of artists, playwrights, composers, sound designers, and storytellers spanning five continents. Our work lives in sound, in the ear, in the imagination · where the oldest form of storytelling meets the newest form of connection.
In 2014, we partnered with the United Nations Development Programme in Suva, Fiji, funded by the European Union, to develop Talanoa Mada / Stories to Tell · a workshop in creative activism using folklore as a vehicle for youth empowerment.
"The grace of folktales is to mix insight into earthiness until the material world becomes transparent."
Peter Oswald, playwright & core company memberThe Lore: Audio Theatre Series for Young Audiences of All Ages.
Folk and fairy tales from around the world adapted for audio, preserving stories that are disappearing with the people who carry them. Each production is a homeopathic dose of goodness · timeless, transportive, made with meticulous craft.
The Little Mermaid
The original Hans Christian Andersen · not the sanitized version. A story about voice, sacrifice, and the price of becoming.
Outwitting Eloko
A Congolese forest spirit tale of courage, wit, and the wisdom hidden in the unseen world.
Catching Time
A folk tale about the one thing no one can hold · and what happens when a child tries anyway.
Cupid and Psyche
The ancient myth of love, trust, and the impossible tasks that reveal who we truly are.
The King Who Outlawed Jelly Beans
An original tale about joy, absurd authority, and the small rebellions that change everything.
Cackle & Bone: Dark Folklore & Storytelling (PG+)
MANÓR
Adapted from Karl Heinrich Ulrichs' 1885 novella. Set in the Faroe Islands. A haunted, intimate drama about identity, exile, and longing.
Lysistrata Re-Imagined
Aristophanes' ancient comedy of war and women, reimagined for a world that still hasn't learned the lesson.
Nature of Spirit
A verse adaptation of Plato's Phaedrus, featuring Alan Turing and Isobel Morcom. Audio theatre as philosophical inquiry.
Headless
A bold retelling of the Headless Horseman legend · darker, stranger, and more alive than the version you remember.
Krampus
The shadow of Christmas, given full voice. A midwinter reckoning with what we choose to fear and why.
